Jump start your morning with a cold shower

The best way to start the day!

It’s 5:30 AM, your alarm goes off and it is time to get out of bed. To most, the idea of starting the day with a cold shower sounds insane, like something a madman would do. At first it is unpleasant, but you quickly get used to it and I promise the benefits will be undeniable.

You are going to take a shower anyways, might as well have it work for you. Besides, do you think the Spartans took hot showers? Hell no! Even if they would have had access to hot water, they still would chosen the cold. Simply because they realized doing uncomfortable and challenging task is precisely what will make you a hard, mentally tough individual.

Luckily, the same holds true in modern times. Now there is even scientific evidence supporting the benefits of cold shower therapy. So, before you write this off as a bad idea let me explain the benefits!

Cold Water Shower

Increased Alertness

Once you step into a cold shower your body will be sent into fight or flight mode. You’ll instantly take a deep breath, which is a natural response, signaling the body to keep warm. Blood will rush from your extremities to your vitals and you will experience a true burst of energy!

Reduced Stress Levels

In our fast-paced society, everyone could use a slight reduction of their stress levels and this is a perfect way to start.  Jumping into a cold shower eases our response to stress. This promotes greater tolerance and over all resilience in trying situations.

Weight Loss

Two types of fat tissue can be found in our bodies, white fat and brown fat. White fat is considered to be a bad kind of fat. It is accumulated through eating more calories than we need to function. It is an ugly kind of fat. Usually, we can see it piling up around our bellies or thighs. On the other hand, there is brown fat. Good kind of fat. It is activated when our body needs to heal itself up. Especially when our bodies are exposed to extreme temperature swings — like cold showers.

Improve Skin and Hair

Cold water is the most natural way to take care of your skin and hair. Hot water tends to dry out your skin, especially when you stay in the shower too long. However, cold water will shrink your pours and tighten your skin. This helps fight dirt from getting in and will leave your hair and skin looking healthier than ever!

Increased Circulation

As mentioned before cold showers signal your body to pump all your blood to your vitals. Your heart being one of them. In an attempt to keep ourselves warm, we start pumping blood in a more efficient manner. This study found that over time cold showers can increase heart health, reduce blood pressure and strengthen our immune system.

Combat Depression

The skin has a high density of cold receptors. Much more than the warm ones. These receptors, when being exposed to cold water, send a mesmerizing amount of electrical impulses to the brain. Resulting in anti-depressive mental boost according to this study.

My Overall Experience…

The first few days were pretty rough. I pretty much dreaded taking my morning shower. But after a few long days I started to adjust. I would not say I looked forward to them but I didn’t dread them anymore. The cold almost felt normal after a week. I honestly really started enjoying the burst of energy I had afterwards. After 30 days I began to really embrace it. It seemed to give me a mental edge in the morning. For the most part I kept the habit around. Occasionally, I will take a hot shower but will always turn it to cold for the last couple of minutes.  (I have been told this is called a scottish shower)

Making a habit out of cold showers wont be easy, but if you wanted easy you wouldn’t have read this far. So, congratulations. Start your day like a savage tomorrow!

There really is no downside. I challenge you to try it for a week and let me know what you think! I can promise you it will be worth it. Some people might call you crazy but those aren’t the kind of people you should be associating with anyways. Find people who encourage you to try difficult task and push you to be better every day!
