North Island
New Zealand is one of those places that I can promise you will fall in love with. Known for volcanoes, dense forest, glacial lakes, and beaches, oh and the sheep…lots of sheep. The diversity here is simply unmatched by any other place in the world. I have spent a good amount of time thoroughly exploring both islands and still cannot seem to get enough. It is beyond beautiful, the people are friendly, cities are clean, and the weather is pretty moderate (for the most part). So I wanted to share my Top Five experiences from the North Island in hopes that it inspires you to plan your trip to middle earth! The list is no particular order, but be sure to check out the Top Five for the South Island next!
Mount Taranaki
Mount Taranaki (also known as Mount Egmont) is a sight to be seen! Located on the West Coast of the north island, near New Plymouth. Somewhat off the beaten path but the region has a lot to offer. From world class surf breaks and hiking trails to quiet cafes and art galleries. If you have your own transportation I would HIGHLY recommend taking the “Forgotten World Highway” its a wicked twisted road but well worth it. (Be sure you have plenty of gas, I nearly ran out)
If you are fortunate to have a clear day I would suggest hiking to the Pouakai Tarn, you will get a unbelievable reflection of the mountain from the lake. I went on a cloudy day and still enjoyed the hike but I gave up hope that the clouds would pass and headed out. Huge mistake on my part, the clouds cleared less than 3 hours later. I was able to get the shot above but had I been patient I could have gotten the picture I was after.
Cathedral Cove
Cathedral Cove, located on the Coromandel Coast, two hours from Auckland. Don’t let the short drive fool you; the scenery will change incredibly from lush green pastures, to dense forest then when you finally reach the town of Hahei, you will be at a loss for words. The cove itself (pictured above) is a short 30 minute walk from the car park on a well maintained trail suitable for all ages. On your way I would also stop at the nearby, hot water beach. If the tides are right, you can dig down a few feet and have your own hot tub! It was overcast when I visited but I had the entire beach to myself. For those feeling extra adventurous like I was, book a scuba dive with Cathedral Cove Dive
Rotorua
Rotorua offers ample opportunity to experience most of what New Zealand has to offer. I opted for more touristy adventures at this particular stop. I simply could not pass up the chance to Zorb, considering it was invented in New Zealand. Afterwards I rode on the Skyline Gondola. At the top you have plenty of options. I decided to sample a few wines with Volcanic Hills Winery and take in the wonderful view of Lake Rotorua. I took the Luge back down the hill and managed to crash just before the bottom; got scraped up but I had a smile on my face.
On my latest visit to Rotorua, I explored the nightlife more than I had in the past. The famous “eat street” dinning district did not disappoint. The main area featured restaurants, gastro pubs, cocktail lounges and patio bars all with their own unique atmosphere. My favorite happened to be Ponsonby Rd but they all served cold beer.
Tongariro Alpine Crossing
If I only had twenty four hours to spend in New Zealand, this is where I would go. Tongariro National Park, the oldest and one of the most spectacular parks in the country. Located right in the middle of the north island, this place cannot be missed. I would suggest setting aside a full day to hike the Alpine Crossing. It can be strenuous at times and you have to arrange for transportation but it is so incredibly worth it. There is a reason it is rated as one of the best day hikes in the world, year after year.
On the 12 mile hike; you will pass the red crater, see the famous turquoise and emerald lakes, ice fields and so much more. On a clear day you will even be able to see Mount Taranaki, which is over 65 miles away!
Wellington
Known by the Kiwi’s as Welly and located at the very bottom of the north island. For many travelers, this vibrant city serves as the gateway to the South Island be it by hoping on a plane or catching a ferry across the Cook Strait. You might be surprised to learn that Wellington is the capitol of New Zealand, but when you see the “Bee Hive” and Parliament you will understand. I generally try to avoid major cities but there is just something about Wellington that I cant help but love. Be sure to visit Te Papa, the National Museum of NZ (free of charge) and afterwards grab a beer on the iconic Cuba Street or head over to cable car pictured above. All three are even within walking distance of each other!
For another awesome view and photo opportunity hike up Mount Victoria. You will have an unparalleled view of the city and harbor. Not to mention a pretty cool chance to watch planes fly out of the Wellington airport. If you are interested in history the National War Museum is also worth a look.
Honorable Mention: Auckland
I know I said I try to avoid cities but it seemed unfair to leave Auckland off the list considering each of my trips to New Zealand have begun and ended here. I also learned how to drive on the left side of the road here, which is a story in itself. The city is not walk-able like Wellington but it does have some worth while things to see. The picture above was taken from Devonport, across the harbor. There you will find abandoned WW2 bunkers and fortifications as well as small but detailed Navy Museum.
I would recommend booking a tour of Rangitoto Island, a volcano off the coast, that has many hiking opportunities (Bring food and water, nothing is sold there). If vineyards and shopping are more your style head over to Waiheke Island. Either will make for a perfect day trip!
Check out the Skytower for a panoramic view of the city. Then head over to Vulcan Lane if you are looking for a pub!
