Quick Post…
After crashing a bike and taking an honest assessment of my terrible Tarzan approach to swimming. I began to second guess my desire to race a triathlon, yet!
If anyone saw me in the pool or were lucky enough to see me eat shit (on a borrowed and very expensive bike) within 20 minutes of my first ride. They would probably advise me to let my triathlon dreams sail away; possibly warn me on the risk of drowning, or maybe remind me that I could break my neck on the bike.
I couldn’t agree more,
Anytime you are around water there is always a risk of drowning. Just as there is a inherent risk while riding a bicycle. Trust me, I know the risk (when I was a kid I crashed into my Nana, who at the time was trying to teach me to ride a bike. She ultimately had to have hip surgery, which is a story for another day.)
But its not the risk!
Drowning and bike crashes don’t worry me, if anything my lack of proficiency excites me. It just means I have a lot to learn and will be challenged to make drastic progress with swimming and cycling. I know with hours of hard work (and I’m sure a few more bike crashes) I will succeed with triathlon.
Back to the 100 mile challenge
When I decided to start looking for challenges, instead of avoiding them. The first challenge I took on was running my first marathon. However, my end goal was always to run a sub-24 hour 100 miler. That end goal never changed, despite failing miserably at both attempts I’ve made at 100 mile ultra-marathons.
To be honest, since the Jackalope Jam I have slacked off from running. I have been spending my free time in the pool. The rest of my time has been spent staying up late working on producing more content for this site (which I have absolutely enjoyed).
It won’t be easy, but nothing worth while is ever easy!
Spending your weekends running 30+ miles solo and unsupported is never fun. But I always seems to learn the most on the long training runs. So, I know I’ll adjust back to the grind just fine. Im not sure what race I am going to set my sights on yet. But rest assured it will be epic and it will be soon!
I think crashing a bike and getting laughed at the pool was a sign! Not a sign to give up triathlon (like I said I will be back in the pool and on bike shortly). Instead, I believe it was a sign to finish what I started! Before shifting my effort to different fitness challenge.
Running a 100K at the Jackalope Jam, was an incredible experience but it was not the experience I will have by finishing my first 100 miler! Something I have been after for a couple of years now. So, its back to the drawing board and I will be training like an absolute savage to ensure I show up to race day in the best shape of my life.
Stay Tuned!
Be on the look out for an update on what race I will be training for.
If you are in Texas, be on the look out for upcoming group runs. I organize and invite those willing to hit the trails to come out and log some weekend miles!
Check out the Challenges list and blog to see what else is coming soon!
